What kind of error should I expect to see out of digital Pyro Gauges? The reason I ask is that I have had a pryo probe in my drivers exhaust manifold that is read by my bullydog monitor. It seems like it has always read a little high. For instance the truck idling is right around 420 deg F at startup and I see a few posts on here saying to let the turbo cool down to 400 before shutting off the truck, so I have always used 450 as my shutoff point.
I'm currently working on installing a Snow Performance Stage 3 water meth kit that uses both boost pressure and egt to trigger its injection. I put the probe for the Snow kit in the passenger side manifold in roughly the same location I have the other on the driver side. I haven't driven the truck yet, but at Idle they are reading almost 100 degrees different at idle. Snow is around 325 and the other is still around 415.
So do you think the readings are just off because of error in the gauges or is one side really running a bit hotter than the other.
(btw both sides have smooth turbo up pipes, no egr scoop to worry about)
In my experience, RTD sensors are rarely off, until they fail completely. Of course, anything can happen, but it would be rare.
I agree with you that 420° idling cold is very high. Mine would be down in the low 300's.
Are the probes interchangeable by any chance? If so, try swapping them. Otherwise, you will need to find a way to use that probe to measure a reference temperature, such as boiling water.
You could have an injector overfueling on one side. Just something to keep in mind if you don't find the answer elsewhere. A contribution check should show that.
I think the probe bases are identical. I'll try putting the Snow sensor on the drivers side after work and see what happens. I did also notice that the BD sensor is a lot more responsive than the Snow one, it probably has a higher sampling rate.
Edit: I would be surprised if I have a leaky injector, the truck doesn't blow any back smoke at all unless you really get on it and then it only gives out a little puff until the turbo spools. I do have a small amount of stiction that only shows up when it's colder in the winter though.
Of course, Bully Dog could program in any kind of offset they wanted. I have no idea if they do that. Comparison from others with the BD might be useful.
I don't think there is any "gain" I can adjust for on the BD pyro. I can adjust most of the other things it reads, but not that. I have the fuel used meter dialed in so close it's always within .2 gallons of whatever I fill up with...
