2004 E450 w/ Diesel
Hello all, I am checking out my buddys truck, the local shop told him he needs a new engine. The truck seems to struggle to get up to and maintain speed. I test drove it today and noticed that when I would let off the gas pedal the turbo would make a growling sound, and when I turned the truck off I could hear the turbo winding down, but it sounded a little rough. Is the growling sound some sort of gate opening to relieve pressure or something going wrong. I am not sure what engine it is, I can't find any ID anywhere, but it only has 31,000 miles on it. It is a 2004. Is there a way to test the turbo? Any info appreciated. Thanks

2004 would be the 6.0. I have heard of the VGT turbos failing from the truck not getting hot or run long enough to burn the carbon out which clogs EGR valves etc.. I think the only way to check the turbo is to pull it apart and look.

The van does not have a boost gauge, I can here a slight wine from the turbo but no sounds of a leak.The turbo is spinning for sure. Is there a way to test the boost pressure with some sort of gauge and what should it be? How about a way to check for a clog in the system all the way out to the end of the exhaust?
If the turbo is clogged, where would the clog be, in the exhaust side? Thanks for the replies.
