turbo questions?
The design maximum boost pressure on the 93/94 factory turbo's was a very conservative 7.0 psig at which the waste gate would open and not let the boost pressure climb any higher.
I disconnected my wastegate and have pushed things to 10 psig with my existing Garrett turbo. I am sure the turbo would put out more if I turned up the fuel; however my exhaust temperature are already pretty close to the maximum (1,100 deg F)
If I wanted to go beyond 10 psig boost without risking melting or seizing up pistons I would have to make two key modifications to my truck:
1, Increase the exhaust piping fromt the current 2 1/4" to say a 3" or possible 4" to reduce turbo backpressure
2, Add an intercooler
Once I have made it over these two hurdles I could then turn the fuel up and let her rip. Maybe some day. For now what I have does the job just fine.
If you don't have a wastegate to control turbo boost make sure you get yourself a boost gauge and a pyrometer so you can monitor and take your foot of the pedal when things get to hot.
