Of course one of my plans is to go to my FMC parts department and buy around 10 quarts (since I'm only draining and changing the external filter).
I know that everyone says buy OEM filters and use authorized fluids, but I went to NAPA (which is were I get my coolent filter from) and found a authorized list for external filters for the transmission, so I went ahead and got it. I asked them what would be a authorized transmission fluid for the truck and they said the Valvoline Max Life is the correct fluid. I looked at the back and under the recommended for use section it states that it works with Ford Mercron LV.
Of course I'm a little sceptical if I sould still go to FMC and get there fluid or using the Valvoline would be a good idea.
Just a thought but in the advertisements for the Maxlife products I think they say it "conditions" (or somthing to that effect) the seals. I have avoided these products thinking of an old trick my Dad did years ago with a slipping transmission on a Dodge Dart (I know, but he's a MOPAR guy). A pint of brake fluid and a short drive and it worked fine the next day. He said the brake fluid softened and swelled the seals and raised the pressure. It lasted a couple of months with no slipping and failed suddenly and completely just like he said it would. Anyway I'm not sure what they use to "condition" the seals but it has somthing extra in it and I bet it ain't coconut butter and lanolin.
