Hi I'm new here just bought a 1965 f100 custom cab with 4 instrument gauges and I'm having a little trouble getting my gauges to work. I have replaced the voltage regulator and the sending units. the gauges will work if they are plugged in individually. If the fuel, temp, and oil pressure are all plugged in they wont move at all and if 2 of them are plugged in they only move about a quarter way up. Really frustrated help would be appreciated.
did you replace the voltage regulator in the engine compartment, or the one under the dash?
if it was the one in the engine compartment, do a search here for "instrument cluster voltage regulator". you may want to verify that all is well behind the dash.
The instrument cluster in my CC is of the 'sweeping' variety and the the instruments would occasionally fluctuate, I attached a ground wire from the instrument cluster to the steering column bracket and the instruments seem to have settled down. The 65's are not garaged so I cleaned all the ground connections and added a tab bit of dielectric grease to them, as well as, the harness connectors.
Suggest test CVR, it should oscillate between 0-10v. There's also a way to test guages using a 2 'D' cell flashlight, disconnect power and attach a wire from each side of gauge to the the neg. and pos. side of flashlight, the 3v should peak the needle.
I replaced the one under the dash, and i have the oil warning lamp and a gauge.
When both the optional oil pressure gauge and warning lamp are present, there's a fitting with provisions for the two oil sending units, one for the warning lamp, one for the oil pressure guage.
Also, the larger can oil pressure gauge sending unit is engine specific...there is a number stamped in the square base of them which ID's them..Bill, myself or others with the master parts catalogs can ID which one you have...the smaller one for the blade connector AFAIK wasnt marked for the specific engine. I do have a few of the larger sending units...if needed.
