Just bought a new to me '09 F350 Lariet. Has all the bells and whistles except a rear DVD player. Only 14,000 miles, so it should last me awhile. I was considering a 5 Star tune but read in the manual that if a box is plugged into the CPU that it goes into permanent memory and cannot be removed, so the dealer will know and void the warranty, that true? I have been looking for a truck for about 6 months and was thinking about a diesel but this V10 came up and with the increased maintenance and repair of diesel, I think I made a good choice to go gas.
Looking forward to learning a lot about this truck and maybe adding a camper later.
welcome bill! I too bought a used 09 F350 Lariat in Jan. 2011 w/ only 15.5K on it. I'm running a 5Star tune and LLLLL OOOOOO VVVVVV EEEEE it (thats my best Ron White). I don't know about the memory storing, hell, who knows what the guy before me did to it. Good luck with her, don't go too far past any gas stations, and enjoy.
A tuner WILL store a code in memory where an ordinary code reader can't find it or clear it. Disconnecting the battery won't clear it, either. You need a tool the Ford dealers have to read and clear that code.
When that code is present it proves that a tuner was installed. That CAN void the warranty on the entire drivetrain. It won't always do that, but it is possible.
Ford has spent millions on warranty claims caused by tuners. They added this code to reduce that cost. I was there when it was added to the software.
Why should Ford pay to fix something that failed due to bad tuning in an aftermarket programmer? Or due to the engine making more power than the transmission was designed to live with? Why is that Ford's responsibility? If you want more power, be ready to pay for things that break.
That warranty stuff was done mostly for the diesels. Of course, that doesn't stop a dealer (or Ford) from refusing to warranty something on the gassers.
If it were me, I'd probably get another PCM to play with. But who knows what that entails these days in terms of what needs to be set in the replacement PCM. VIN, sure. what else? Who knows...
If it makes a difference, I put mikes 5 star tune (87 tow/ perf) on at 60K miles and an till 186K. Replaced that engine with a new one and Mikes tune went right back on the truck, 13K on it right now and enjoying the extra that it brings.
5star is awesome, I would never go back to stock. A mild 87 tune isn't going to damage anything. I have always tuned my trucks, even ones that I have bought brand new and have never had any problems.

I am also the proud owner of 2009 , Only had it a week and I'm in love, I had the 7.3 she was tired but was good while it lasted.
I would love to do a tune on mine. But considering I put 4k a year in mileage. I have a warrenty that is up in 2016. That should give about 24k on her. I will do it then. I dont want to chance it just in case.
I only have 37K on my 2006 but have always felt that if your going to tune then you have to except the good as well as the bad! I don't think Ford should fix it if it's tuned, and I would not expect them too. That being said, I too have Mike's 5 star and love it!!!

I may do a tune someday, but not until it is out of warranty. Why take a chance with what could be a very expensive fix. I would think Ford could also deny a power train coverage claim as well as a motor claim. If you have the money to cover it if something goes bad than cool, go for it.
