You are remembering correctly in fact the smoger 460 of 1976 only was rated around 195 ponies if my beer soaked cells are working.
But in most states if you got the 1 ton 460 licensed as a TRUCK or Farm vehicle, you could legally (sort of) pull all that clean air crap off, and a few realitivly inexpensive mods later, easily double the HP.
My 1992 460 had 245 ponies and torque of 395ftlbs, so it was not a slouch, I think the reason it felt so good on takeoff as the 460 is a short stroke big block.
Now I still say the pulling power of my 460 exceeded my V10 for performance. A little less hp and torque can be made up on how quickly it winds I think.
If you go Diesel go 4 1999 or newer 7.3 turbo Intercooled. I've have a 93 F350 460 gas pig. A 97 F350 7.3 turbo non Intercooler. & a 2000 F350 7.3 Intercooled & just picked up a 08 Dodge 3500 6.7 Cummins & say its the best Diesel for the money & fuel mileage. Both Ford & Chevy can't beat the Cummins.

Well okay BUT regardless you've just replied to a thread that is almost 20 Years Old, without a single reply from anyone else in the time since.
I do believe this OP lost its relevance about 19.5 years ago.
