oil cooler change- mystery part

Hi all, I've searched the web/forum to no avail. I'm in the middle of doing the EGR delete/oil cooler swap. After smacking out the old cooler from the housing, i discovered a small piece on the bench which I'm sure wasn't there before.....
It looks like a check valve of some sort. 1/4 inch in diameter, 1/4 inch long, brass housing. Cylindrical in shape, w/ 4 holes around periphery, 1 steel ball bearing in center. The ball bearing moves up and down to block or unblock periphery holes.
I can't see anywhere it would go in the housing. This thing could have very well been on bench before, but i can't assume. Any one seen something like this in the oil cooler housing?

Thanks! Dave

No, if this thing did actually come from the 6.0, it woulda been from the cooler housing. The filter housing was on the other side of the shop.

I'll try and get a pic up....

ok, mystery part identified. Upon installing new thermostat, i recognized the little check valve/air bleed pressed into thermostat housing. I guess at some point this thing broke off an old old one and found its way into the oil cooler then fell out when i smacked the old oil cooler out...
