Hey Sean,

Just my .02 but I'm not sure it would work great around the corners. Just thinking of how fabrics and thick materials behave on round bends. Unless you're good at making seamless cuts to relieve the stress caused by the bends.

I have done both routes before - carpet by the yard and pre cut/molded carpet. Unless you are a professional upholster (which I am not), I would highly recommend the molded route with a jute backing in all the right places. Whether you use sound dampening materials or not, the carpet with jute backing and molded will save you a lot of time, IMHO. Also, I like the jute backing for even more sound AND heat dampening. That is not to say however that precut, molded carpet won't require effort to make it work easier, it just lays better. I am all for saving money but some times you end up spending more trying to save a few bucks. I think that might end up on my tombstone. Good luck.

As a sidenote - I recently purchased some carpet-by-the-yard from an ebay power seller. The stuff was new but obviously stored in a bad environment. It was moldy for starters. Be careful when buying carpet and make sure you aren't buying a nightmare (I am HIGHLY allergic to mold spores and had to visit the ER after opening my new ebay purchase).

Having spent many,,,,many hours one time in my life, steam pistol in one hand,, carpet roller in another, form fitting carpeting,,,I became a true believer that (A) I would never do that again and (B) its worth the money to buy form fitted carpets or pay someone who knows how to do it (better than me that is).

PS: my carpet turned out prtyy dang good if I say so myself but by the time I was done I had steamed just about every one of my fingers,,,,which sucks bad.

My vote, buy fitted carpet or hire it out.

Yes guys this would be practical to go molded carpet. The only problem for me in the old fivety would be the trans cover is totally rebent/re modified to accept the aod transmission. What i am saying is it is going to be very hard to find a molded carpet to suit my application. Is their a way i could mold the carpet with steam or heat?

Nice job jaye! So to be honest you had to cut and be patient with contact cement. Did you use heat or steam? Or sew the bends?

I just used 3M spray super trim adhesive I can't remember the max temp. However, it was a lot more than what in SC. I made a mistake and tried to pull a piece up and it ripped the carpet so it's bonded good. With the 53 floor being mostly flat except the trans cover the carpet layed pretty good. I also have sound deadner and juke on the back of the carpet

Jaye it sounds like you did the same thing I want to do. How hard was it to lay the sound deadner? Was it the rubber stuff? Do you just glue it down than glue the carpet to this? Sorry for all the stupid question but I never done this before thanks sean

It was rather easy just time consuming. The type I used is like dyna mat sticky rubber with aluminum backing. I clean my floor very good then cut and place the sound deadner in. Iused aluminum tape to cover the creases. Next I used super trim adhesive and put the juke backing followed by gluing of the carpet on top of that. I don't remembr the name of the sound deadner I brought two rolls from a company on the internet. I think each roll covers 144 sqf.

I haven't done my carpet yet, but here's what I'm doing. With my T5 tranny, I was able to cut down the trans cover until it's almost flat on the floor. I'll add a second layer of sound deadener to the lower areas to make it closer to level, then roll out the carpet. I have a friend with an industrial sewing machine to add edging if I need to make cuts like Jaye did, but I may get away with out any cuts.
