48-50 Carpet on Ebay

Does anyone know anything about S&S Classic Warehouse #2? They have an auction for 48-50 pickup carpet on Ebay for $130 buy it now and free shipping to the lower 48. I haven't decided whether to go with carpet or a rubber mat yet but was wondering if that is a good price or not. It's molded carpet and seems to be available in just about any color you could want.

Vern, you gotta be careful on the quality of the carpet. It may look good in a picture, but if the quality is poor, the carpet won't last long. I bought a carpet kit from stockinteriors.com for my 56. It was molded and came with heel and toe pads. Nice kit and was pretty easy to install. I was pleased with the quality too. I paid $110 for the kit, but that was over a year ago. If I had to do it again, I'd get a piece of carpet from a carpet store and put that in. The carpet was almost a perfect square. For the old trucks, it's not much to put carpet in. Good luck.

Ed,

Being the cheapskate I am, what would I be looking at if I just got carpet from a carpet store and did it myself? Would I save enough to make it worthwhile? What about the edges? Isn't there something that has to be sewn on the edges to finish it off and prevent it from fraying? I suppose you are right about the molded part. I thought the floor looked pretty flat too. In fact, I tried to put some carpet in it from my donor car but it was molded in the wrong places...

Vern, the carpet has no sewn edges, In fact, you have to use a razor and trim the excess carpet off. On the door jams, I went to Home Depot and bought aluminum carpet edge and screwed that over the edge of the carpet. There are several carpet reminant stores that sell pieces of left over carpet. Sometimes you can pick up carpet for $20-40, and the quality and thickness of the carpet is much better than any kit you buy. You just won't have the heel pad molded in on the carpet, and so what... I also bought the padding at Home Depot for the install. No offense, Vern, I'm a cheap skat too. Of course, I'm married and have children too. LOL.... I should have some pics in my gallery of the carpet. If not, I can email you one. (it won't cost you anything, LOL... )

I've bought remnants at carpet stores and generally it costs about $20 - 25 for the durable, low-pile stuff. Then I've taken them to an upholstery shop after cutting to fit, to have the edges bound. It isn't much more money and you can have them sew in a heel guard if you like (I prefer to, I tend to dig in). They can't do that if you go with a high pile carpet, tho. I used carpet runner (black stuff they sell by the foot at Lowe's/Home Depot) for the heel guard, but it isn't real durable. You could also just use a cheap rubber floor mat with those anti-skid spikes on the back, cut to shape and set it in the appropriate place, easier to replace.

I used a black $20 5' x 8' rug from Wal-Mart to do the carpet in my 48. For the price, I couldn't go wrong.

Have some of you installed flat regular carpet sucessfully over the original humped transmission cover plate with good fitting success? I would like to do it but have been concerned on fit over the hump without a molded carpet.

49- The kit I ordered for mine stated it was molded carpet. When I pulled it out of the box and laid it out, it was completely flat. When I installed it, the carpet laid right down on all the valleys, curves etc. Actually, they recommend laying the carpet in the sun for while before installing it. That way, the carpet becomes flexible and easy to install.

I agree with some of the others, I want to buy some new stuff for mine as I would like mine to end up more of a show truck, (that may be very long term as I have a lot to learn/ and factory) But I do like to save money. If you don't want a show truck I would suggest trying to find some left over or even a small piece of new carpet from a carpet store. Laying it in the sun for a while wouldn't hurt to make it more flexable for intall either.
I have one question for you (and I suppose me too)
If you want it factory or close, did they even offer carpet in those years?
If not what was offered if anything?

Factory was only the plain black rubber mat as far as I know.

So the box said molded but in fact you could not see that it was molded at all. Is that correct?

Correct. Looked like a flat piece of carpet to me, with the exception of the molded heel and toe pads on the drivers side. Acrually, I think if it was molded to conform with the floor, it would be more difficult to install. You'd have to align the carpet perfectly for it to fit right.
