Hi gang,
Normally hanging out in the Super Duty forums but the wifes 01 Expy 5.4 died today and I need your help. The needles on the dash aren't doing anything. The motor turns over fine but will not crank. I did check and there is fuel press at the fuel rail(cap off and spraying when you push in on the valve, didn't check actual pressure).
I have AE but don't have a CEL and no codes. Didn't have time before work to get in much deeper.
Finally have time to work on it. Now it starts and runs fine but the gauges are still going whacky. Every 30 seconds they jump full scale then drop to bottom scale then return to normal. I read it's possibly a battery issue so tried a new one, no help. Battery cables are fine.
Were is the ECM located? Want to look at the connector. Is there a fuse for power to it? Where is the ECM relay.
Took the cluster out to make sure the connections on the back were tight. They look and feel fine. Disconnected and inspected the connector for what I assume is the PCM through the firewall in the passerger side corner of the eng bay. Looks good and clean.
The gauges continually go through what appears to be a power up like when you first turn the key on.
Anyone have a wire diagram for the instrument cluster?? Need to figure out where power comes from and where ground is. Think I may have a bad relay, heating up opening, cooling down closing, etc.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
No water or moisture in the cab and we just had a pretty good rain.
You may be having trouble with the SCP network transmitting required data to the HEC (Hybrid Electronic Cluster).
If you have the AE package, the Ford Specific Enhancement should be able to display "U" codes for network problems.
I believe in 2001 you could put the HEC in self test mode by holding the odometer Select/Reset button in and then turning the ignition switch to the run position. Hold the S/R button until the odometer displays tESt. then immediately release the S/R button. It is now in self test mode.
Then press the S/R button to cycle through the tests until the odometer displays dtc. Any stored dtc's (B, C, P, or U codes) will be displayed each time you press the S/R button, until the next test comes up on the display.
Press the S/R button for three seconds or more to exit the self test mode.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I do have AE with the Ford enhancement but am brand new to it. Still trying to figure out how to use. Any sugestions on how to look at "network Problems"
I did run the test using the odmeter and it did work. It was late and there were a lot more parameters displayed than I was expecting. I need a chart or list to help understand them. Hopefully I can do it with AE.
