There are other threads that describe in detail how to install the windshield seals. As far as the rope, this goes into the main channel and is pulled when the window is in place to make the lips of the rubber fully seal. I still fully recommend using vinyl covered cable (1/16 jacketed cable available at hardware stores) to do this task, as it does NOT break or leave any residual material behind.
If you're not comfortable doing yourself just call the glass place. I called for some quotes and I think the cheapest quote was like $116 installed with new glass and a new seal. At that kind of price it's hard to resist.
This thread is giving me good hopes for getting mine replaced. I thought it was going to be $$$$ to get a new windshield so I've been searching for a decent used one. Mine has dirt literally baked on it from the Texas heat. I've tried everything to get it off lol. $100 for a new one is no problem!
I had three spare ones. Broke one moving it (dog jumped on it, she's a jerk and they have NO strength outside of the frame. Broke second one removing it. Had it all free but one corner, was working alone and got impatient. Cracked in that corner. Third one I pulled without breaking after learning from the second. I got a new windshield rubber with some stuff I got a while ago so I may try it myself, but I'm not worried about it... If it cracks I'll shell out 5 $20's and deal with it. Maybe worth it for nice clear new glass anyway.
To take them out I cut inside with a razor knife then push out. I put 3 fronts in and 2 backs now and I use weed wacker string. Get a decent gasket from DC soap it up good and be careful. I sit the bottom in strings meeting in the middle pull each one a little at a time. They make little plastic Popsicle like tools that help but I did mine without. It help to bump the windshield from the outside with your palm to help work it in on a angle. The hardest part is getting to the top corner because it's usually out a few inches once you get there. Take your time they go right in. The first one I did I got too rough with it and broke the top corner.

Sounds like It'd be $100 well spent then lol I don't have access to a ton of used ones and I'd be mad if I broke a new one so I'll just let the pro worry about breaking a new one lol
I woulda paid $100 too if they would do it for that around here. Nobody wanted to touch it since it's not a glue in 1 man job. I don't remember exactly what the price was but it was in the $200's plus glass if they broke it. They wouldn't come out and do it either it would have to be dropped off. The answer I got from most was they wouldn't touch it because a lot of them are rusted at the seam. None of the ones I did had any rust but I did get what they were saying. At least when I broke the orig one my buddy sold them for $50 for a nice used one so not a big loss. Myself I thought the flat non sliding rear windows were harder idk.
Winchester auto glass was the cheapest and he said he wouldn't even try to use my used glass because if it broke it would be on him and if his breaks then it's brand new so at least he knew it was his fault. I also had told him I'd already pulled the glass.
He said if the frame had any rust he would have to use epoxy but didn't sound worried about it.
That was a year or two ago. Also that was priced with me taking it to him. If you can take it there you save money, even if they don't offer that over the phone. Some of the really small mobile guys won't let you take it to them...
