swapping my auto to manual, pulled the column and discovered the ignition harness (mounts ontop of the column) has two badly burned and melted housing around the two thick gauge yellow wires. Are these the main ignition wires that send signal to the starter relay? I want to find out why this happened instead of just replacing.
I dont know when this happened. truck is a 1991 f350 7.3 diesel automatic.
It could simply be that the ignition switch contacts developed a high resistance over time and got hot. A lot of current goes through that circuit. I would replace the switch and not worry about it.
One way to lessen the current through the switch is to use power relays on certain accessories - Ford used to do this back in the 1970s on vehicles that had a lot of power accessories on them (power windows, seats, heated rear window, etc).
