When I turn the key in my 91 f250 the starter system is not recieving power. I think the problem has to do with the ignition switch at the key. I have taken the steering wheel hoping to find the wires that go to the ignition system but all i can see are mechanical cranks and levers all the way down the column. Where is the actual switch? What color are the wires that come from the switch and go to the ignition system. Ignition system is Thick Film Integrated lV.
The ignition switch itself is located and bolted further down the steering column kind of a rectangle looking box with a harness connected to it. When removed, it should have a pin that indexes with a slot in the column.
Does the engine crank?
Have you ruled out the starter solenoid?
Or will it just not start?
There are easier tests before you rule the ignition switch.
Let me know how it goes.
But is the starter solenoid getting power? On my '90 F150, I had an actuator break inside the steering column. It runs from the key cylinder to the top of the column, then straight back to the spring-loaded switch that sends juice to the starter solenoid. I had noticed that the key felt funny when I turned it to START for a couple weeks before it broke. Until I could get it fixed, I had the steering column ripped apart, and to start the truck, I would turn the key to ON, then push something into the slot on top where the actuator was supposed to go. It was about a $10 pot-metal part.
my starter solenoid is not getting power. for the last few months i have been starting the truck by turning the key to the run position and going from the + side of the battery to the top of the solenoid with 2 wires and a switch. The key also felt a bit soft after this happend.
I have taken the key cylinder out but have not gone past that, in to the column. How do I find this actuator? Does the actuator have a part number that would help me locate it inside the column.
