I have a 1997 ford expedition 4x4 with the 5.4 liter engine with 150,000 miles and It has a lot of problems. it is throwing the infamous misfire codes. It is po301 and po308. It is also throwing codes po351 and po135 o2 bank 1 sensor 1. It idles great but accelerating it misfires. and the other day I was driving and pressed the gas and there was no power as I pushed the gas all the way to the floor and I got nothing and then all of the sudden power came back so harshly and I barked the tires and it took off. Is this related to the engine codes or a transmission issue. I haven't done anything yet I wanted to see where to start. I didn't know if I should start with the cops, o2 , cleaning the maf, or what?
I was looking under the hood and and coil #1 was not connected properly so I plugged in and I cleaned maf sensor and took it for a drive without clearing the codes and i went for a 5 mile drive and all the codes were gone except for #8 coil code so I felt back there and it felt kind of wobbly so that may be a possible bad coil or not in there right. while i was on the drive the tranny was not shifting that bad. I just bought this expedition so I'm not sure how they are supposed to shift. the rear tires are pretty low and when going into second you could hear it chirp the tires. Is that normal? I didn't think that big beast should be doing that.
The transmission shouldn't be shifting that hard. Id just check the level, color and smell of the fluid. Do a tranny flush/filter and drive it. The COP's are notorious for going bad or causing misfires after a car wash or downpour even. There is a small rubber elbow that plugs into the top rear if the intake manifold. You can't see it but you can feel it with your hand. ALot of times those go bad, get a hole in them etc. Its like a $6 part at an auto parts store. Id replace all the COPs/plugs etc.
I just checked the fluid level with engine cold and it is way over the fill mark. would overfilling cause a problem with shifting? the rubber thing your refering to what is it called are you talking about a pcv valve?
If you have a harsh 1-2 shift most likely the 1-2 shift accumulator spring is broken. The engine needs to be running at operating temp to get a accurate trans fluid level.
accumulator spring? in the valve body? oh that sucks. lol. I hate working on auto trannys the funny thing is I went to school for mechanics but I always hated auto transmissions and never paid attention lol. Let me ask ya'll this ok I switched cylinder 2 cop and cylinder 8 cop and cleared the code will I have to wait until it cycles fully for it to throw a code? some cars will throw a code shortly after it happens. It is still misfiring i'm just trying to see if the code switched cylinders.
