I have a 1992 F150 with a stock 5.0. The thing is a dog, not even enough to spin the tires. I've been driving it like this for about 3 years now and I now think it's time for more power. As a simple thought, I figured headers and exhaust. Can someone suggest me a good exhaust? I don't have to run Cat's and won't. I'd like true duals that are loud but don't cut the power like straights. Also, some good headers? Any way to remove the speed governor? Any other decent upgrades that won't hurt my wallet too badly? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Long tube headers would be the way to go to free up some power. Dual exhaust would also do you some good. Use 2.5" pipe maximum. Flowmaster makes good quality mufflers, some people don't like the sound, but everyone has their own taste. Straight pipes won't cut power, back pressure doesn't affect a gas motor in a positive manner ever. You want as little back pressure as you can get. Another power boost would be a more aggressive camshaft. I'm sure somebody here can suggest a good 302 cam. 5.0s are pretty weak motors in stock form anyway though, so it's not unusual.
The biggest consideration is the milage on the motor and condition of the drive train before you do any modifications. For instance you do not want to get aggressive performance parts in a motor with alot of miles or your going to probably blow it. I would recommend buying a motor at your local junkyard and build it in the garage that way you can swap at your convenience and not try to work on your daily driver.
The motor is a refurbished 5.0 from NAPA with about 60,000 miles now. I like the sound of Borla's, but can they be done in this old truck? Also, what are some good long tubes? I've only seen Summit and Flowtech.
mufflers aren't really vehicle specific. You can put Borla's on your truck, I don't know anybody that uses them so I don't know what they sound like. As far as headers, there are a bunch of brands. Hedman is pretty good. Hooker is about as good as they get. Flowtech are Ok, but they don't always mate up well with these motors. The summit ones are identical to hedmans I think. Oh, and the summit street and strip mufflers are identical in quality and sound to the flowmaster 40 series, for half the price, for future reference. I use them on my 89.
