mildly built 351w exhaust question
So i have finished the ever long trek to finish my build. At the moment, the motor is sitting in my garage waiting to be installed for her initial start up. I thought about running my current exhaust, stock y pipe going into 2.25" glasspacks and kicked out infront of the passanger side tire. Although from what I have been reading through the past few days, im not sure I want to use this set up.
With that being said, will I benefit with using an Xpipe to "balance" the exhaust and tone? And should I go with a 2.5" set up with glasspacks, or will having glasspacks on this motor get myself into trouble??
Specs as followed:
1975 block with a .040 overbore
GT-40 heads with 1.7 RR
Crane Cam 444232
Shorty headers (For breakin period only) then going to Flowtech LTs
Stock intakes
I know its going to be a screamer, but I want it to sound good and loud, not just loud. Any opinions on an exhaust to run??

funny, i was just going to ask the same question. i just finished putting my 351w back together... i didnt go with a bore or anything tho, just the same cam you got. i picked up a set of long tube flowtech headers at the local swap meet for $15. they have 2.5" collectors, and i already have a flowmaster 70 series 3" exhaust from the cat back... so i was just gonna run the truck to the exhaust shop with open headers and get them to fab up the section from the headers to the muffler, gonna ditch the cat... so i'll be doing a y-pipe into single 3"... if you wanna do duals, i suggest either an x or an h pipe.... mustang guys love those H pipes, even though they dont make one hell of a difference for performance, i'm told they sound better... i would suggest doing full 2.5" pipe with an x pipe, it will sound great.

I never heard a big V8 that sounded bad. I don't like the sound of true duals though; too zippy down low, just like twin 4-Cylinder motors ( heh ).
I wouldn't put too much thought (or money) into this. I would keep it to 2.00'' or 2.25'', glass packs are fine. Run an x pipe if you want to, but I would just use a dual in / out muffler if it were me.
Just my two cents, but I'm no pro. Someone else (where's Bear River at?) will know a whole lot more than me.
Just keep in mind these aren't big blocks, gentleman.
Edit: Baffled mufflers sound pretty decent, too. I use flowmaster. The key to beating the drone is to run full length tail pipes ( these provide best performance results anyway).

My trucks pretty loud now, with no cat and glasspacks. I know with just headers, these motors scream pretty loud. But I have more than just headers going on I cant wait. She may run funny without the adj FPR and wideband O2 in the upper RPMs, but I wont know until i get her broke in. I had a FM44 on before the glasspacks and it wasnt loud enough for me with my stock motor, but I guess we'll see what happens.

My opinion is, forget the glass pak, they dont help performance.
I would go 3 inch off the collector, to a 2 chamber flowmaster, or equivalent. Then out the side, or over the axle and out the side or back. I never run 2.5 on a engine. 3 inch gives you better sound. I ran 3 1/2 on a 302. Wide open, it sounded great.
Either go 3 or 3 1/2. 2.5 is for 4 & 6 bangers.

You want 2.5" pipe all the way out. 2.25 is for 302s. I dont think you need an x pipe, i dont have one and my truck runs fine. Ive got hooker LT headers, imco single chamber mufflers (suckers are only 12" long - VERY deep and loud) and true dual all the way out on my FI 351

Thats what I was thinking, it may have sounded good, but i bet it was a gutless wonder.
I think im going with a cherrybomb extreme. ordered a magnaflow Ypipe dual 2.5 into a 3" single and an extreme single 3'' to dual 2.5s. Should sound pretty sweet.

easy as heck to install just install after headers somewhere before the muffler.. just weld them in

you can go fancy and install electric cut outs they open on the flip of a switch but i dont think i would spend 200+ no those lol
