a motor vehicle is the worst investment you will ever make. other than a rare collectible, it is guaranteed to lose value as well as require maintenance ($$$) during ownership....even if it stays parked.
Aaron, I have found that the gear in that price range is best. Anything more than that tends to be overkill. Do you remember if it was a spinning reel, or baitcasting? (Open, or more closed) That braided stuff is pretty sweet. Haven't used it yet myself, but want to get some next time I need line.
it was open, i would say it was the style of reel that is most familiar. my neighbor nick was using a closed one that had the reel perpendicular to the pole. he said it was more expensive and really nice but one major complaint about it was that the weight of the spinning reel would overspin on a big cast and run a lot of extra line out, usually causing a tangle. he said it was easy enough to catch the reel with your thumb just before the lure would hit the water, but if you are a split second too late you end up with an extra 3' of line hanging out.
i wish, they arent really a fan of that. it ruts up the trails like hell, you can in NH which is why the trails arent as nice in some places. obviously i wouldnt go insane and destroy the trails but my dad would definitely not approve

Yeah. Definitely a spinning reel. The one like your neighbor's was the baitcasting. The newer ones have brakes to help with the over spooling problem. I have been hesitant to get one for fear of not liking it. They can handle heavier line and bigger fish.
