I'm sure this has been on here a few times, but I'm looking for a few opinions. With my current truck (a 2000 Excursion, FTW) successfully murdering my wallet, I'm looking into a late 90's, early 00's ranger, with the V6, 4x4, and I want a lil' extra umpf for her. I've read plenty of threads and reviews on Cold Air vs. Short Rams, and I'm still on the fence. I'm looking for one that'll give me better torque at lower RPM's (for light mudding and things like that), but I don't want the heat soak to hurt it too bad if I'm on longer trips. They both have their pros and cons, but I wanna hear what some people who actually have the intakes think.
Well after your responses, and some more looking into it, what would you suggest for more power? Exhaust, tuner, HEADERS, gearing? And could you list possible price rangers for them as well, please?
Shy of major engine mods, a complete exhaust system and a tuner (yes i takes all three to really make any difference at all), you aren't join to get much in the way of any real world gains.
By major engine mods, you need to remove the cylinder heads, get them ported and matched, port and match the intake, do some minor porting on the exhaust manifolds if you want or get some headers, then get a tuner and dial in a tune to better take advantage of your mods. Thats gonna get a good start that will deliver real results. If you want to step beyond that, you will either need a different cam, or you will need to go forced induction.
Regardless, its pointless to soup up the engine unless you also soup up the trans to handle it. The manual trans is fine even with the stock clutch, just keep up on the maintenance. The automatic needs to be upgraded or it will not hold up to anything beyond stock output for long. You need a shift kit, valve body calibration, and possibly better clutches. These things by the way, also increase the amount of engine power that reaches the wheels slightly, and generally improve throttle response.
