Update: pulled starter and solenoid. Both engage and are working just fine. Yet when I install the starter I get nothing (except the solenoid clicking). The engine turns over by hand just fine. It's like the starter is frozen. I'm thinking of removing it and reinstalling it...thinking maybe I don't have it lined up correctly some how.
Bringing up an old post but the problem (starter will not engage) is still kicking my %&@! I've taken the starter out 4 times and have even crawled underneath and have confirmed that it is not binding against the flywheel or anything like that. I have gone as far as running the positive and negative cables directly from a known good battery to the starter.....nothing. When I put the starter solenoid in the mix the solenoid "clicks" but still nothing beyond that. I know I must be missing something so simple but I'm at a loss.
Here is what I have:
53' F100
312 V8
-Solenoid temporary mounted to the firewall (easy access for now)
-Have taken the starter and solenoid to shop and they said they work
-Known good battery; have charger hooked up and at one point put the charger on "starting" setting but no difference
OK, starter and solenoid are good. Battery good. Only thing left is wiring. What is the condition of your battery cables. Do you have good grounds (engine, frame, body grounds). Grounds cause more electrical problems that anything else. Check for paint under ground connections.
Have you tried the stater out of the truck.
Sorry I'm asking so many questions, trying to jog the old memory.
Brand new jumper cables......I attached a ground from the block to the frame.....had both starter and solenoid out of truck a few times, even took both to a electrical shop and he ran the starter on his machine just fine. He even said my solenoid was good. I will grind down every metal surface that has anything to do with it starting and try again.
