I have been thinking about rebuilt engines, I can get one from a local Ford dealer. Its a "long block" engine. What exactly will it have on it? Manifolds, water pump, thermo, dist,?
A long block generally consists of a block, head(s) and all the tin (oil pan, valve covers, timing cover, etc.) and are already assembled. Sometimes, they may include various other items like manifolds, distributors, water pumps, etc. Then, you'll transfer your manifolds, accessories, EFI (or carb) from your old engine to your new one. If you get a complete engine, then it should be pretty much plug and play... stab it in, hook up the wiring, and go.
Just bought a long block from Jasper. $1600 plus for engine, and $200 plus for parts kit. I think I will get a 250 rebate when they OK that my engine is repairable.
I hoped it would have a valve cover but didn't. It did have an oilpan installed, head. I paid an extra 200 bucks and they sent me a kit with all gaskets needed plus new wires, plugs, dist. cap/rotor, water pump( which is usually a mandatory change) oil filter, radiator hoses/cap, serpentine belt, etc.
Basically the engine is stripped down and rebuilt then sold to you. It comes on a wood pallet( as many large car/truck parts come) and all you see when it arrives is an oil pan, block and head. No distributer, no oil dipstick tubes, sensors or anything, it is barren. It kind of looks like swiss cheese, because of the holes you need to put something into. It does take a while to swap all components, especially if everything is dirty and caked with oil. I have spent more time cleaning than turning wrenches. I am spending time to clean so I can hunt down leaks better. No sense in putting dirt ontop of your new engine. It is a big project, no doubt about it.
I compared Jasper to Ford's deal and went with Jasper for the price. I sure hope I got lucky and received a good engine.
Go Online at Jasper.com and see what you can see. I'm not recommending Jasper yet, let us see if the engine can at least make 5000 miles.
I think you'll have good luck with your Jasper motor. Those guy's are probably the best (and biggest) rebuilders in the US.
They are the only ones I know that have their own fleet of trucks to deliver motors.
i bought my '82 in 2001...it had 180k miles on its body but like 2000 on the new rebuilt jasper engine...it was my first vehicle and i beat the **** out of it...now it sits in my driveway...runs like **** but just needs a tuneup and a carb rebuild. i would reccomend a jasper motor for stock longblocks but i'd go to aftermarket next time.
