Ok guys I have an 1988 Ford F150 XLT Lariat That I Would like to put a 460 into . I would Like a list of what all i need and what to look for when finding the engine also want to know what needs to be changed It has a 5spd ZF Manual w/od oh it is also 4x4 do you think this swap would meet Indiana /Illinois Emissions ? Oh it has 134,000 Miles on it but i'm 16 and have rebuilt one 302 so far so looking for something new to do . What Kind of gas miles would i get do you think?
Wow, you really have the zf in there? Did you get that stock? If you do go with the 460 unfortuanately you will need to find another zf with the 460 bellhousing, yours is the 90 deg windsor. Do you want to run EFI? I havn't found alot of info on the 460 swap with EFI but im sure it has been done. The 351 is a much more popular swap which is the reason im swaping a 351 in mine instead of a 460 unless I find alot of help. But for sure you will need new motor mounts, frame mounts, flywheel/flexplate, computer, all wiring, exhaust modifications, new intake hoses (the 460 has bigger throttle bodies), etc. Try and find a donor truck if your serious about this. It would make things alot easier. Hopefully someone else has something to add.
Gamehunter yes I am Serious But I am 16 and want to Learn so all Help is needed so What would be needed in a donor truck ? I Would need Carb . WOuld Carburated pass emissions you think ? Thanks Again
If you have strict emitions in your state then you will have to stick with EFI from a post 88' since a carb setup will not pass. Actually in your situation any EFI 460 should pass since EFI wasn't introduced in the 460 till 88 or so. im not sure if the added cubes affects it substantially or not. You may want to check with your state regs to see how leaniant they are. I just hope your not from California, they REALLY frown on this sort of thing. I have a few relatives who live down there. Do you have a place were you can work on your truck and not be in a big hurry? Because this sort of project will take a considerable amount of time.
With the donor truck it would be best to have the entire front end with everything connected to the engine. Wiring this thing is going to be a you know what!! I would suggest you order a few books that go in depth with this subject. Just last night I picked one up from amazon.com that had everything you would ever need to know about the ford EFI. I can't remember the exact title. There are a few other ones that may include some useful info on a 460 swap such as Performance Modifying Ford Trucks and The Ford Bible.
hey there your going to need to get a main cross member(the metal brace between the frames under the engine)because the 460 oil filter is going to be in the way.or like i did get an after market oil filter kit and move the oil filter up by the grill.there about 45 bucks.it a metal cap(screws in were the oil filter goes)with high presure (or braded)oil lines and a mounting bracket for the oil filter.they make ones for dual oil filters too.if your 460 has watercooler hooked in to it just take it off and get a lower radiader hose from a earler model that didnt come with the oil cooler.ther should be a seveneighths bolt holding the cooler to the block.you can also get an inline cooler from a 4x4 shop.a good idea because theres not much room in there for heat to excape.
My 460(factory) has an angled adapter for the filter mount, so that it clears the crossmember... makes it a bit harder to get at though...
