I've read statements both ways here and there, but never a difinitive answer. Today I went for a drive, about 100miles, flat road, no wind. I used manual mode, 6th gear the whole way. Usually, when in regular "D" mode, I'd get about 18.5 mpg on this trip. Today, in manual mode, I got just over 20mpg. I was thinking maybe because the torque converter was locked while in manual I was able to save some fuel?
BTW, this transmission is awesome! My previous truck was a GMC, and let me tell you, the Allison has NOTHING on this fine transmission from Ford!
The TC will lock in manual mode as it does in auto.
The only thing manual mode offers is the ability for you to tell the computer when it should shift (when it's ready).
Now, you can apply the perfect amount of throttle and shifting and get into 6th without the TC locking and run full boost with the throttle to the floor.
I do that from time to time when I feel like goofing off.
As soon as you decel, the TC will lock and the fun will be over.
