Bought a black and white police car and was wondering if it would be easier for me to paint the white black or the black white. The top and doors are white now. The deal is this is a do it yourself job and I want the best results for the effort as far as matching paint. The front is all black including grill which is sort of flat finish. Thinking about one stage base with clear. Most of my painting experience is for protection and not appearance such as my horse trailer and older dump truck.
If you go base coat/ clear coat with no metallic, either one is a breeze to shoot. However, white hides a lot of sins if you know what I mean. My vote is for white in your case.
Not only does white cover a multiple of sins, but black exposes them all the more. I would be looking at what is going to be the easiest color to change to. If the doors are white then I am assuming the door jambs are white as well. Are the A pillars exposed? if the door jambs are white then I assume the exposed metal in the interior is white as well. Is the firewall white? If the door jambs are white, white might be your best bet. If the firewall is not you can always shoot it with some kind of heat resistant undercoating, if that is acceptable to you. But I'm thinking that in this color scheme, it's a good bet that under the deck lid and the hood are black. If that's case then you're still going to have a lot of extra taping to do if you want it to look right. In either case, if you've got any body work to do, white is going to be your best bet. If the body is straight and you're just shooting color, black is always my favorite.
We're going to get a real estimate from Maaco, but over the phone they said they would paint the whole car for $350 or just the white for same price. There is no real body damage, but some door and trunk edges that have no paint and a little surface rust and the front bumper cover looks as if it has been replaced and sprayed and it's kinda orange peel and some cracking paint. We may prep it and let them paint it. Local guy wanted $1500.

You can get a decent job from Maaco if you do your own prep. It would be nice if you could do your own taping too, just to make sure it's done thoroughly.
