92 F150 - Problem with trans EOD4
The trans shop is very reputable and they said the torque converter is shot and at the age of the unit I should replace it. So I had them put in a rebuilt and now the same dam thing is happening.., but a bit worse. When the trans drops into 3rd gear with light throttle the RPM drops from 2200 rpms to 1300 rpms. That's a big jump.., no ? The engine lugs and then I get a metal rattling sound coming from the trans. Sounds like if I dropped some small metal pipes on a concrete floor and they bounced around and hit one another. Once the RPMs pick up a bit this noise goes away.
The trans shop wants the truck back and is standing behind their work but I wanted to arm myself with knowledge before i go back.
So questions.
** what the hell is the shif-ping "Ching" noise
** what is the metal pipe rattle noise
** Is the rpm drop from 2nd to 3rd too large ? Feels like it's skipping to fourth.
Thanks !!!
Any idea what the ching a ching a ching noise is when it shifts into 3rd ?
Also, what sensors control the trans shifting., MAP, TPS, RPM or a combination of all of these ?
I had an issue with cracked vacuum lines tracking down a no-heat issue and wondering if a vacuum leak can also cause trans shift issues. I swear.., when the trans shifts into 3rd it really feels like it's shifting into 4th.
Thanks for the feedback.
I had a member from another forum help a bit. After telling him that I had a ABS light come on.., and the fact that my speedo bounces all over the place, and the check engine light coming on, and the shop I took my truck to said that I have a speedo cable (incompetent sons o bitches), led him to tell me that I have a sensor malfunction somewhere in the system. The Speedo bouncing problem happened after the shop went in to fix the ABS light.., said he had to unplug the connector on the diff. DSS I suppose. And after that the speedo started acting up.
But the main trans symptom existed long before the ABS light came on and also before the speedo bouncing issue. To recap, the main problem is the trans seems to shift too early into 3rd and then lugs the trans and that's when I get that ching a ching-a-ling noise.
So I drove around over the Memorial weekend and focused on the shifting and rpms. What I noticed is that when the trans shifts from 2nd to 3rd, at around 2400 rpms.., normal everyday throttle, when the shift happens the rpm drops to around 1900 rpms and hangs a fraction of a second and then drops another 500 rpms, and then the trans ching a ching noise starts until the rpms pick back up.
I thought the OD was kicking in early so I disengaged the OD on the shifter and did another test. The same thing happened but noticed after it shifted into what I think is 3rd there was no shift into 4th after the rpms climbed. So now I'm thinking that the trans is shifting to 3rd.., hangs a split second and then drops to 4th at 35 mph. Which lugs the crap out of the engine and trans.
Can anyone suggest which sensor to check first ? I spoke to the trans shop the replaced the trans (after the shop with the ABS and speedo issue) and they did check for codes but didn't recommend changing any sensors.
Thanks for the assistance.
Phil.
The VSS signal is used in the calculation of when to shift as well as the TPS, RPM and signal from the MAP. Add in engine temperature and transmission temperature as well. They all enter into the mix of when/how hard to shift.
