I am getting a low knocking / rattling noise under load that seems to be coming from the lower engine area. I think it sounds like a berring (280,000 KM on 97 f-150 4.6 by the way). Could it also be the slap or marbling I have read aboud here on the forum or is that a different sound.
If it is a berring, what are these engines like to work on? I have not done work on this truck before.
I am also getting a squeek whil driving from somewhere underneath that I think might be a u-joint. It goes squeek squeek squeek and only when accellerating and it varries with speed. What do you think?
A low dull knock under load is quite often bearings
I think I would start by hooking up a mechanic oil pressure gauge and see what you have for pressure.
The engine isnt really easy to work on. Make sure you have a good manual if you are going to try it. You'll also need some special tools for setting the cam timing.
The squeeking does sound like a U-joint.
I replace one in a truck like your's today. It only squeeked in reverse.
