I saw this ad FORD EXPLORER GF Peformance Chip on the forums and am wondering about it. The claims seem pretty outrageous. 60 more HP? 4-7 more mpg? Lower emissions by 25-40%? For $69?
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And every action has a reaction. Like blowing up your engine or something. I do not plan to buy one of these but I'm wondering if anyone did, and if it worked.
These performance "chips" are all over the auction sites as well. Contrary to the photo, it is not a "chip" at all, but just a resistor (which is probably less than $0.02 when bought from Digi-Key or similar) that installs in the IAT circuit to fool the engine in to thinking the incoming air charge is some fixed temperature. Up to 60 HP increase? Maybe if you drive a Bugatti Veyron with 1000+ HP. Oh, wait, you couldn't use one of these on the Veyron because it is forced induction.
These things do not work reliably, especially in climates where the ambient temperature swings quite a bid throughout the year. If you want to spend money on a mod that has a chance of improving power and/or fuel economy, the only way to go is with a custom tune that will get loaded in via the OBD-II port. SCT is one company that makes a tuner for your truck and there are a few reputable vendors of the SCT tuner and tunes. Some even offer dyno tuning to really tailor the tune to your individual Explorer.
Thanks. I'm in no rush. My truck is bone stock except for the stereo, and it passes emissions. I don't want to foul anything up. The computer must have been programmed the way it is for the truck by Ford for a reason and I want to keep it basically stock. But I'll check those out.
