i have a 1990 f250 4x4
I have replaced the steering gear and tightened it lightly and there is still way too much play in the steering wheel.
the problem seems to be in between the steering wheel and the gear box but i cant pinpoint it. Has anyone else come across this before because it is really difficult to offroad with. thanks
with the engine off, have someone wiggle the steering wheel side to side while you look at the steering shaft. there is a teflon bushing between the upper shaft and the lower shaft. if the spring steel shim that holds it in breaks, the bushing will fall out, or work it's way up into the upper shaft and you end up with around 1/4 turn play in the steering column.
you cannot buy the bushing or retainer clip.
it can be rebuilt, but is a real pain to do. i can do it now in about 2 hours. it is really easier to just replace the steering column.
JY's should have a better steering shaft, firewall to box with a rag joint. W/O a rag joint, u feel every crack in the road, every pebble, its way too much. Ask me how i know
If theres no play in the shaft, why not ? I have 2 shafts from jy's in my DD an prroject truck with no problems with tracking stright an no play at 70 on highways.
if you can tell the one in the junkyard is any better? Truck is not on the ground and may have steering lock on with same age and likely as many miles as your truck
Got lookin at my steerin linkage and I thought my steering box was going but turns out its the slide shaft between the steering box and the ujoint under the dash.
Anyone suggest a place online to get one that will shop to Canada? Or what the part is atually called of I go to the part store?
