Is this a good idea? An almost 50 year old truck nut taking a 1250 mile round trip, burn about $450 in gas and another $100 in motor oil in a 60+ year old truck that rides like a buck board and goes just a little faster to hang out with a bunch of other truck nuts and sleep out in a field.
I will be making the trip myself because there is no way I can pry my wife away from her daily soak in cow crap for more than a day. Also, she would think a trip like this is the stupidest thing ever thought of although I can think of one fairly recent major idiotic idea dreamt up by members of her family that would be impossible to top, but that's another topic for demestic dispute discussion site.
Cons:
I could have a major break down 600+ miles away from home.
I would be spending money I don't have a lot of.
I could be easily be convinced never to return home again (I don't really see this as a con but...)
Pros:
I could have a great time and another great truck related story
I would meet a few people I've known for years but have never met in person
I could experience the once in the life time adventure I should have done when I was teenager
I could easily be convinced never to return home again.
bobj, I'm in Ky but on the north end and my place is open if you need to rest for awhile before the last leg of the trip, this goes for anyone in the Mich, Ohio, Pa,states or anyone just needing to rest,Garry aka HOMADE.
Bob, if the planets align, I will be driving my truck there, too. 1450 miles each way. I need to get some stuff done to it to make it ready, and I'll be going 50 mph on the top end, but time is meaningless to me when it comes to something like this.
I just joined the other 6 enablers in the poll...
Seriously check your budget, and if this is doable without killing a vacation for the kids, go for it! I mean where else are you going to have this kind of fun?
You are taking picture aren't you? I might have to change my vote if there will be no pictures...
burn about $450 in gas and another $100 in motor oil - Your wife will spend that much in calf bottles and crap waders
to hang out with a bunch of other truck nuts and sleep out in a field. - You'll never get another chance
Bob - If there is/was anyway that I could make this run I would - I would replace my 'round America Tour that I know I'll never make unless it's in a urn hitch hiking with good folks
Bob, i don't know what kind of life you have had so far, but life only lasts for so long. I would hate to see you regret anything. I think this visit will be really nice.
As you said...meet people you have known for years and never met. Kind of bizzare isn't it? Still, life is short buddy!
I really want to experience this and pray we can do it!
I drove my truck on last years Hot Rod Power Tour from Cocoa Beach Florida to Detroit Michigan, I too had the what if worries prior to leaving home, then a care free type of friend said.... whats to worry about, if something major happens that cannot be fixed, put the truck in a storage unit and pay the storage for 1 month up front, finish the trip in a rental car then go back and trailer your truck home, So I went. I ended up driving 3804 miles without any problems, saw things I would not usually see and had great time. Things actually went so well I extended my trip on the way home visiting friends along the way.
