Well, my backup lights now work. Embarassingly, the problem was with the sockets.

Why embarassingly? Because, literally, the very first thing I did when I acquired the truck was go over the external lighting. I pulled and replaced every bulb, cleaned every contact in every socket, and adjusted all the contacts for connectivity. Except, apparently, the reverse lights - the new bulbs were in there, the contacts were still shiny where I had Dremeled them, but they were utterly flattened from thirty years of use. I adjusted the contacts, put the bulbs back in, and there was light.

Oh, well, it's not all bad...I got a new switch installed, learned a little more about electrical systems, and I finally have reverse lights. Thanks to all for your assistance.

OP- just a note on the connectors that might help. I have a few credit-type cards that are of no importance, but that same material. Blood donor, grocery store, library, etc. I use them to hold the tabs up. Pry it up enough with something, then stick a plastic corner in there to hold it up.

A couple weeks ago I kept having to disconnect and reconnect while I was doing some testing. Made it worlds easier to leave the cards in there and be able to pull in and out without prying.
