I've never been a fan of Nitto Terra Grappler ATs or their MT tires. I've never run them, but everyone I talked to don't seem to care for them much.
I've been running BFG ATs for the last 5 years and I have YET to be disappointed by them. Whether it's rain, dirt, mud, gravel, anything, BFG ATs haven't let me down and have consistently held on to the road.
What made me realize BFG ATs were a good choice:
In 2007 before I lifted my truck, I was running Michelin LTX M/S and drove up to the Pappa's on the lake. It had been raining and going into the parking lot there was a patch of mud. There were cars in front of me and I had to stop not realizing I was stopped in the mud. I went to accelerate to move forward, I found my tires spinning and my truck almosy stuck due to the tread on the Michelins.
A month later, my truck was lifted with BFG ATs and again, I faced the same mud spot. This time even though I had to stop, I was able to proceed without the tires spinning. It was as if I were on dry road; this to me (among other incidents) is proof positive that BFG ATs are the tire of choice.
Contrary to beliefs, BFG ATs are surprisingly quiet on the road and have very good on road manners. They wear well, stop well, and I haven't had any issues out of them whatsoever. They're also VERY easy to find should you need a spare.
If you still have some decent tread on your old tires, you could check out discount tire and see if they're let you trade up to some newer tires. (i.e. give you some credit on your old tires and apply it towards some new tires)
Go with the BFG's. I typically get 55000 miles out of a set, sometimes more. We have them on three of our four trucks, the only reason on the fourth is it is 2wd and never goes off road.
For the same price go BFG. The only tire I have personally had better experience with is the Good Year Wrangler Silent Armour. BFG's are a far better tire than the Nitto in my experience. Better traction, treadwear, and looks. Just my experience, good luck.
Friends - Thanks for helping me decide - I'll go with the BFGs. Planning on 33" 285s mounted on ATX Artillery 18x9 (the least gangster looking wheel I could find that meets specs for the X).
