How much is to much?

I bought an F350 DRW 6.4 Diesel 2 weeks ago. The dealer told me the oil had been changed and when checked the oil was nice and clean. I am going on a 500 mile trip and checked the oil, seems that the oil level is up to the metal on the dipstick. How much oil is to much? I usually do my own changes, but being I just bought it I don't know if they overfilled it or is it normal for this truck. What kind of damage could occur driving over full?

Do the short stick on it and see what the level is. Got to do it in the AM before you start the truck to get any accurate reading at all.
