so my oil maintenance light clicked on in my 2017 platinum f350 powerstroke at 3200 miles, so i hopped out of my truck and checked the oil and there was no oil on dip stick at all!! does that sound right? first service according to ford is at 7500 mile, .
so i had it towed to the dealership. after about an hr they called back and said all the oil was in the sump pump and that it wont show oil on the dipstick after its started for 30 mins?? does thatt sound right? im pretty familiar with diesels and ive never heard that before? do i need to lawyer up? please , any info on this would be helpfull . the very tip of the dip stick did have a tiny bit of oil, and it was jet black at 3200 miles, but wasnt even at the boittom line
Black oil is not an issue. Our trucks can change the beautiful amber into the jet black in a few hundred miles. No biggie there. My take on the oil level is if you saw oil on the dipstick, even if it was low, isn't a huge cause for concern. The 6.7L takes 13 quarts and if 11 quarts were in there it was still getting lubrication. The guy who told you it takes 30 mins to show on a dipstick was definitely blowing sunshine. Uh, no.
I'm wondering where the oil went though. No leaks or drips? Is anyone messing with you and thinking it's funny?
so dealership called back , and said it was 1 quart low. i guess it does say in the manuel that it should take 15 mins to show bak on dipstick after its started . which still seem really odd to me?? so it basicly dry starts if i shut down then start back up? i have a really good relationship with this dealership, i just bought a 2017 gt from them yesterday and the truck is only 2 months old which i got from them also. im kinda at a lost as to this motor tho, it never smelt funny or drove like it was out of oil, but seeing the dipstick bone dry scared the heck out of me
so any one with a 2017, i love for u to start ur rig then shut off and chk the oil and see what it shows. im heading to pick it up right now. thanks guys

"So basically dry start" is just not true if it was down 1 quart and maybe 1 quart in the top of the motor after start up there's still around 13 quarts in the bottom of the oil pan.
All motors that have just ran should sit a bit to allow all oil to return to the pan before checking the level
i only said dry start due to there being no oil at all on the dip stick besides a tiny tiny bit, way below the bottom line .If it shows no oil on dip stick and i start it , wouldnt that be dry? or no? with that said i picked up the truck and all seems fine? but i really dont understand how it would show no oil on dipstick due to 15 quart s of oil being in the sump and none in the pan, thats what the dealership told me the oil was , all in the sump. this is the first ford diesel i ever owned . been in a cummins past 12 years and this was never a issue that i ran into
When an engine running, the oil is being circulated throughout the block, heads, etc. When you shut your engine down, it is going to take some time for the bulk of said oil to return to the oil pan and provide an accurate reading on the dipstick. Waiting 10 or 15 minutes is not at all uncommon to get an accurate oil measurement. When you start again, it is NOT a "dry start" as everything has a nice film of oil. This is why it is critical for the oil pump to come up to pressure quickly.
Are you 100% sure it was at the "full" mark when you took delivery? If not, can't assume the one quart that is low was ever there. When you pick it up from the dealer, check the dipstick and make note of the oil level on the dipstick. Then, periodically (after the truck can sit for at least 15 minutes not running) check the oil level to ensure you are not losing any.
It is also not uncommon for a new engine to "use" a little oil as all those new rotating parts settle to each other.
im kickin myself for not taking a pic of the dipstick. it looked like it never touched oil ever. it was shinny new with a dab at the very end. i started it first thing in morn ,shut down within 3 seconds of start and chked oil to see a new dipstick with a dap at end of stick. srry for not beiing more clear on my issue. but one would thing if it had no oil there would be some warnings or chk engine lights. with that being said it didnt sound weird or smell like it was burning up. and i didnt even chk the oil when i bought it ,which is my bad but when u spend 80k on a rig you would think that you wouldnt need to, again im a ******* for that!!!
I really don't think you have anything to worry about at this point. When you get it back, just keep an eye on the level for the next couple of months. And remember to check it after is has sat for a while. Good luck, let us know how it all turns out!
usually when I pull a dipstick .it has worked its way up a little showing over full . I'm confussed , of course that's if I pull dipstick right after stopping second or two two open hood .. musy be diesl thing
