Hey everyone, Since I have known my fiancee, her 2001 ford expedition has made the most horrific vibrating sounds. Some things you should know...
1. Does not make the sound in park.
2. Only occurs when the engine is hot.
3. Cannot hear it at high speed (15+)
4. When stopped with the car in gear the noise is deafening, when she takes her foot of the brake the noise dissipates.
I first thought it was the heat shield on the catalytic converter, so I removed it and the sound persisted. I think it may be the front cover on the transmission, But Im not very car savvy so I do not even know what that thing is called to search for a solution.
I do not think that the mount is broken. But then again I'm not real sure where to look for that. When the truck cools down I will crawl back underneath it and give it a look.
You will probably need your tire jack and a block of wood to lift it up if the mount is bad. Don't put the jack on the drain pan though. It could be an idler on the surpentine belt is badly damaging things.
You know, I haven't thought of that. I first thought it was the CC but then it sounded like the tranny, how would I go about checking inside the converter?
Haven't checked yet, but if it rattles then what? If it doesn't rattle? How do I judge the results of this highly technical 'grab and shake' technique.
When youhave a bad vibration you need to use the process of elimination. See if there isa looxe broken exhaust hanger or hole in a muffler/pipe. Loosen the adjuster on the belt and see if there is a loose damaged drive on the belt. Then follow back along the motor to see if there is something laying loose along the frame in front of the driver, inside the engine compartment. Looki with a flashlight to eagle eye it. If you have bad drive shaft bearings it will throlw the assembly onto the street soon enough, same way with bad broke ball joints, soon the wheel will just break off.
