I GOT A 94 F-150 AT AN AUCTION FOR 1700 CLAMS. I KNEW IT HAD A TICK, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS COMING FROM THE MOTOR. THE MORE IVE BEEN DRIVING IT,THE LOUDER AND NOISIER ITS BEEN GETTING. THE OIL PRESSURE IS FINE AND HAS NEVER DROPPED ANY. I THINK ITS COMING FROM THE CONVERTER. WHEN ITS IN A HIGHER GEAR AND YOU GIVE IT ENOUGH GAS SO THAT IT WONT SHIFT TO A LOWER GEAR, IT SOUND LIKE SOMEONE HOLDING A PIECE OF SHEET METAL AGAINST A FAN. AS SOON AS IT KICKS DOWN THE SOUND INSTANTLY GOES AWAY. WHEN ITS IN 3RD AND THE CONVERTER LOCKS THE SOUND ALSO GOES AWAY THEN. HAS ANYONE EVR HAD A CONVERTER DO THIS OR EVER HEARD OF ONE DOING THIS. ITS AN AODE BY THE WAY.
Could be a broken flexplate. They will make a loud clicking sound sometimes metallic sounding, when they have one or more broken mounting points.
That needs to be fixed soon or the whole plate may fail and leave you stuck.
It might also be a few other things. Could be a metal heat shield that is vibrating at just the right engine speed and load. Also might be the gas tank shiled of a mount for running boards. I have had both give me metalic clangs or clicking or buzz when I had just the right engine and load conditions. Also could be a loos exhaust hanger.
Might also be a motor mount that is allowing your engine to twist enough to cause something to come into contact with something else.
Easy and cheap fixes are the heat shields, exhaust hangers, running board, tank shiled etc. Usually just need a bolt.
More expensive(if a shop does it) is the flexplate since you will need to drop your tranny or at least move it back. Motor mount also could be expensive if you have a shop do it.
Without hearing the noise, I would first crwal around underneath your truck and feel any hardware, especially shields and mounts and hangers.
Then I might block the wheels, put on parking brakes and have a friend put the tranny into gear and then watch the engine, looking for twist while your friend gives it a little gas. Next crawl around some more listening for the noise. Naturally this is not very safe and if you get squished, I warned you.
ITS NOT A HANGER OR SHIELD. I WAS HOPING IT WOULD BE. ITS DEFINITELY COMING FROM THAT GENERAL AREA WHERE THE MOTOR AND TRANNY GO TOGETHER. IM JUST GONNA GET MY PARTS NEXT WEEK AND TACKLE AND HOPEFULLY EVERYTHING WILL BE OK. OR AYLEAST I HOPE THAT IS WHATS WRONG AFTER DOING ALL THAT WORK.
before you drop the tranny remove the inspection cover and rotate the engine checking to see if the convertor bolts are all tight ( if loose they make a rattling noise) and visually inspect the plate for cracks.
ALREADY CHECKED THE BOLTS FOR CONVERTER. I WAS HOPING THAT WAS IT ALSO BUT IT WASNT THAT EITHER. IM GONNA BE CHANGING MY OIL PAN SO IM JUST GONNA MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER AND UNBOLT THE TRANNY. IM GONNA HAVE FLEXPLATE AND EVERYTHING RIGHT THERE INCASE I NEED THEM. IF I DONT ILL TAKE THEM BACK.
