So I guess I need to drop some dough on a scan tool. I don't want to spend a crapload, So I am looking at either an AE or OBDlink with scanxl pro software. Both would be with the enhanced ford package and both are about the same price. Anyone have experience with the scanxl software?

For those who possess a knowledge of the OBD-II protocol, ScanXL™ provides an OBD-II Terminal where you can send custom commands to the vehicle.
That's the one thing I'm unsure of what that entails.
The one big difference between AE and the ScanXL software, is that I can't find where the XL software can turn on or off individual components of the vehicle (like AE has the ability to do on certain components). I don't know if that above quote would involve that or not.
I also don't see what specifics about what can be tested with regard to the XL software.
I don't know about it. I would have to know some other things for sure. I don't want to say that it can do them, I just don't know.
