I did some searching but couldn't find definitive information on how to do this. I have removed the tailshaft on the transmission but can't get the snap ring off so I can get the drive gear off. Anyone have any tips or tricks that I can try to get this stupid thing off? I sat for an hour trying and couldn't get enough leverage on it. If you like I can take a picture of it.
I guess my biggest problem is I can't open the snap ring far enough to get it around the shaft to pull it off. Thought maybe there was a special tool to get it.
The snap ring doesn't have any holes in it for the regular pliers to get ahold of. Maybe I can take a small drill bit and drill them into the ring....
LOL. Yeah, that's for the driven gear. I'm talking about the drive gear on the output shaft on the transmission. I can't count how many times I've replaced the driven gear to try and get the speedo to read correctly. So, now I'm trying to replace the drive gear which looks like this:
OIC. I misunderstood, thought you meant the *driven* gear.
The snap ring for the drive gear will require (most likely) snap ring pliers. There's 2 types, 1 has "pins" to fit in holes in the snap ring, and the other has "slots" for the square ends of the ring to fit into. The type of ends on the ring dictate which type pliers are needed.
These rings fit quite tightly, so as to insure they stay put, so the special pliers are almost always needed.
I have a pair of snap ring pliers but they have pins. I don't think I've ever seen the slot type before. Googling now.... I suppose I could always use 7 or 8 flathead screwdrivers...
