The story begins........
I let my father-in-law borrow my truck to take some tools down to a friend of his in San-Antone. Well at about 1am Friday night in Austin my truck lost pwr. He got it pulled over off the road and saw trans fluid running out and smoke everywhere. They had it towed to a trans shop who was supposed to be open on Saturday. Well you know how that went!
So they had to get a rental and go to the friends house. This guy has a truck and trailer he could haul mine with but the keys are in the drop box!! They tried to fish them out with a magnet but that didnt work either. Anyway, it's finally Monday and the shop is open, we were hoping for a blown line or something so we could limp it home. No dice and they want $3000 to $3500 just to rebuild it. I decide to take my wife's truck down and get it, they have a car hauler on base we can rent. The wife calls and yep it's broke.
So here I am in Wichita Falls 5 hours away and can't find a trailer to use. Thankfully God stepped in and showed why he is who he is! My father-in-law's friend volunteers to haul it up here. I found a freshly rebuilt trans from a shop in Oklahoma City for $1450 with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty.
Anyway I'll be r2 my trans soon and it will be my first. So I'm sure I'll be hunting threads and asking questions from you guys. I really feel sorry for my diesel mechanic cousin. I guarantee he didnt get a lick of work done today. Anyway just wanted to share with you guys I know you'll see the humor in it. As my wife said if you dont laugh you would just cry. Luckily she is the greatest and an avid Pwr Stroke driver.
Sorry to hear that you're having problems. A couple things come to mind. First the $3,000 to $3,500 that you were quoted for the new trans is not that far out of the ordinary. That's a pretty typical price if the transmission is upgraded with a heavy duty valve body and a triple disc converter. The deal you are getting on your rebuilt trans is a very good one, but make sure it is upgraded with the mods I mentioned above. These powerstrokes push the E4OD to its limits when they are stock. Start adding power and you are really making that slushbox work hard. Also, if you don't have one already you would be well off to spend the hundred or so dollars on an upgraded transmission cooler. Trucool is a good one, but there are others that will do the job as well. The best thing you can do for that new trans is to keep it cool.
I just had to rebuild mine here while back. Told the guy I wanted the heaviest duty parts in it that he could. Out the door was just under 4k. Then another thousand cause the sound system got stolen out of the truck.
Good story, I've blown two of them and I also begged for the best parts. Being stranded isn't cool, especially when you have to settle for a local shop to do it that you have no idea if they are any good or not.
