Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I bought after market fobs for my Excursion and am having the exact same problem. I, like you "get" and understand the programming procedure but after trying what feels like a hundred times the doors will not do the lock/unlock step for me to program the FOBs. Would love to know what you found out. ( I have the number pad unlock on my drivers door) . Thanks
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make this work. I do not have the external keypad, so that may not be a factor since you have one.
The next thing I would probably try it to take it to the dealer and have them re-flash the computer and then try to program it. I think the Edge that I have has jacked it up to where the Excursion won't enter program mode, period.
The edge does mention that the theft mode is active, but the X runs fine. The previous owner said he had it go into theft mode and it wouldn't start as soon as he installed the Edge program originally. I'm willing to bet that's the issue, and that removing the edge program doesn't reset the theft status.
My wife is just stuck using the key in the door lock!
I just programmed 3 key fob remotes tonight. I tried the 8x thing, which didn't work, but after a little more digging I found that the driver's door needs to be opened and the doors unlocked. As soon as I did that the locks cycled on the 8th time and I was able to program all 3 remotes. I hope this helps.

Wait, what?
The instructions found in this thread, as well as found all over the 'net, are straight from the factory manual, yet this is a new nugget of info!
So, in looking at the directions I posted in post #2 above, at what point does a person open the door?

I had to do something similar. I simply had to make sure ALL doors were closed, locked and then unlocked before I began the procedure.
I am having the same problem.
Just bought a 2006 van and I have tried every method unsuccessfully.
Somebody told me that if I bought a used Fleet vehicle that it may have had a fob on the keychain but they cut cost corners by not installing the 'brain' in the van (for the opener) that resends the programming signal to the fob.
I also read tonight that I should disconnect my Van's battery for 10 minutes and that will reset. ....several responses were positive so I will try that tomorrow after work.
I have a 2004 f250 with a keypad entry the truck came with no fobs and I have had no success programming it. I know the 8x thing as I've used it on my mustang many times but I'm having no luck on my truck, did leaving the door open work for you?

More specifically, you're (apparently) supposed to actually press the "unlock" button on the driver's door while the door is open... then get the 8 on/offs done in 10 seconds or less.
