Hey Ya'll... New problem... When I tried to start my BII (2.0 a/t 4wd) this morning, It turned over but wouldn't start initialy. I dried the inside of the distributor cap since it had gotten wet yesterday, When I tried to start it again it would fire when I first turn the key but not start. I tried a series of three second cranks and it fired and ran at very low idle but was making a clicking noise under the hood (like a small solinoid clicking). The engine jumped to high idle and the clicking stopped. I shut it off to be sure it would start again and it did but again at low idle with the clicking noise. It hasn't happened again but I don't want to be stranded the next time it does. Does anyone know whats making this noise and why it effects the start up? Thanks in advance.
As Maxwell Smart would say "Missed it by that much" 2.9 L. Good news is it hasn't done it again since Monday. I would rather figure it out so it doesn't. Thanks
Well first of all hard to diagnose without being there. lots of things make clicking sound. How old is the battery is it putting enough juice or just enough. also I would replace the starter solenoid it could be on the way out. Mine made a clicking noise for awhile too,and then one day it stuck in the run starter position even with the motor running Ibroke the battery cable off the solonoid to get it to stop. test the starter to make sure it isn't drawing too much juice from battery. heres a tip if you get your distributor cap wet spray WD40 on the inside of it it WD40 is a water reppelent I have used this a time or two. use di-electric grease on both ends of the spark plug wires. It could also be a fuel pump relay switch that is going too. If it does it again check for spark and eliminate one thing at a time by process of elimination you should be able to figureout what is ailing your bronco ll. Don't forget to listen to see if the fuel pump runs for 2 seconds when you turn the key(fuel-injection models only) carbbed motors remove air cleaner and hand pump the carb to ensure gas is getting there. hope I was able to help.
I would think it's you idle air control. If it has a low idle when you start it. The clicking may be it is sticking or near death. I used to write the date I last changed the distributer cap right on it. I found they last 2 years almost to the day. They need changed when they act up after rain storms or puddle jumping.
Do you hear a quick double click when you turn the key on? You should also hear a sound like " Vert" when your fuel pressure regulator bleeds off pressure. The regulator also could be clicking when running. You don't have enough pressure to get a full injector pulse, so the idle is lower.
