There are thousands of different types of noises and "a strange noise" could be anything.

What type of noise? Electrical? Mechanical? Clicking? Knocking? Etc. etc.
Is it fast? Slow?

Is there actually a running problem? (ie. does it start?) Or are you just hearing a noise but everything seems okay?

I remember mine doing that when my battery terminals were dirty. Just not enough juice to get the starter turned over.

It also very well could still be the starter. Mine buzzed/clicked oddly when it died.

Some others may have ideas of what else to check too.

No, you shouldn't.

I'd recommend it. It's good to check anyway. A bad connection is an easy fix.

Your battery is down

The clicking noise you hear, assuming it's when your trying to crank your engine is the starter relay energizing and then rapidly de-energizing. That happens when your battery is very, very low or your battery cable connections are loose or corroded. Check your battery voltage. It should be about 12.5 or better.
What happens is that the solenoid (starter relay) energizes (closes) and sends current to the starter motor. When a battery is low, it doesn't have enough amperage to turn the starter and keep the relay closed too, only enough to energize the relay. When the relay energizes....the starter draws amps that the battery doesn't have and the draw on the battery de-energizes the relay and the process starts all over again....hence the rapid clicking sound. Have your battery fully charged, on a SLOW charge and try it again. It should go away. If it does.......then you have to figure out why your battery was so low.
Hope this helps, Mike.

Sounds like your relay stuck itself on from the amps draw, you may need a new one,or mabey your old one wasn't bad and you could try that.Never hang on the starter with a low battery, creates a very heavy amps draw.

HUH ???? How in the world does your engine try to start without the key in the "crank" position ? Kind of a crucial bit of info there. You said your engine tries to start without you turning the key ? Please explain to me under exactly what circumstances this is happening (details) then I could probably help.

Parts store starter solenoids are junk. I got three bad in a row from Napa. Their $20+ premium one. Take it back, and keep taking them back if you have to until you can get a Motorcraft.

Check your ground cable. Ditto the battery and starter cables. Bad cables will burn up the solenoid. Check the chassis ground, too.

Please don't buy parts

Hey Kyle,
There are some pretty sharp guys on this forum, F250Restorer, 6 cylBill, Baron Von Automatic, FMC 300.......just to name a few. Listen to the these kinda guys. They're pretty sharp and a lot of others too.

When I read you bought a starter I wanted to cringe. Ask questions ! NOTHING is a dumb question. Wait a day (or less) and you'll probably get a damned good answer from several people. You may have wasted you cash on a starter I think. Also.........give details, LOTS of details. I'll try to help you more but in my first reply I didn't realize that issue was occurring without you trying to crank it. That's a whole new ball park and I think I may, or others have an answer but give us DETAILS. Good Luck bud !
