Alright, I'm going to check this truck out today, just to know what the diesel is like and to see if it changes my mind. It seems like a good deal for a diesel. Seller is the second owner, had it since '03. Says it is in immaculate condition, for a '99. Only has 174k miles, new clutch.
No leaks, no stalls, all truck.
Good grief, who knew shopping for a truck could be such a headache? This entire process is making me bipolar.
I don't need a 4 x 4, I won't be towing anything. I've worked for four years out of a '98 F150 single cab with a 4.2 liter V6. The extended cab would be the best bet, that I'm certain of. It's just now between that 1999 two tone brown one with 174k miles standard with a new clutch and this 2001 dark green 2001 automatic with 140k miles. I really like the looks of this one but the auto tranny is a concern. It has a gooseneck hitch so I'm a bit concerned about the tranny. I'll be driving the brown one tomorrow and then this one the day after and making my final decision. One of the three will be mine, even if it causes the death of me.
It does look pretty good. I also like that fact that it is a 2001 verus a 1999. How big of a deal is that? Are there any changes between those yars? Am I just being mental about buying an older model truck?
If the green 7.3 dosent have a rebuilt tranny I'd surely keep that in the back of my mind. The 4r can be build indestructible but they didn't come from the factory that way. The price and miles on the 2 tone 7.3 manual excab seems pretty good. Drive it get on the hiway feel how the steering is and such. Over all a xlt or nicer package would make the most comfortable truck. So for me that would be some what of a consideration. Also in traffic you will like having the diesel to get on the hiway and pass cars and such.
From what I have gathered a 99 could be a early 99 or a late 99. Ford did not make a 1998 f250 and up. They skipped 1998 and went straight to 1999 and the superduty body style. So build date would be a clue as other signs that I honestly couldn't tell you oFf hand.

truck. He said I would not get good mileage with that 1999, the two tone. Apparently Ford had an issue that they addressed in the 2000 and 2001 7.3 diesels, the injection. He said his helper has the same 1999 F250 7.3 diesel as the two tone and gets 10 miles to the gallon, on a good day.
Anyone know anything about the injection on the 1999 versus the 2000 and newer? Is there a difference which holds back the fuel economy on the older one?
Essentially 1997-2003 have the same motors and injection. Around 2002 or so they had pmr (powder metal rods) vs forged (forged are stronger)... The old body style 97-98 have smaller injectors stock is the only thing I can thing of. Another thing that would effect mpg is rear gearing. Other than that I would lean on the side of bs from that owner. I would though check out the 7.3 section and ask questions they can likely give you specifics more than my trivial knowledge

I appreciate all the help.
I just spoke with another guy selling a 1999 with 252k miles, I might have already posted about his truck. He's the one with some sort of fuel box on it. Turns out he's a mechanic, said that there is a slight difference with the injector pumps on the 99's but in the city he still get's 15-16 and on the highway, pulling an 8000 pound trailer, he gets 20 to 21. And his is an automatic.
I dunno what to think any longer. I'm all types of farkin' confused.
For the HD and SD trucks 1998 was a weird year for Ford. They cut the 97' production short and didn't put out hardly any heavier trucks in early 98' since they were putting out the new Super Duty line. You may have seen them but Ford came out with what they called an F-250 LD which was basically an F-150 with a higher payload package.
Ford actually started taking orders for the new SD lineup in early 98'. My dad ordered a new 99' in either march or april of 98 but it took 6 months for him to get it. So I would say if the truck your looking at was built 12/98 it could have some of the updates on it. Ford does "running changes" with the trucks and phases in updated parts when they run out of the old stuff. So its hard to say.
