Most of the super duty trucks came with different gears. 3:73 was typical. In all honesty it would be easier to just find a same axel out of a 350 for your year. The super duty has different linkage for steering so I'm not positive if it's a direct swap.
The reason I ask is because I got the axle all ready and was not sure what modifications I need to make. The linkage is not an issue to me it all is shot anyway.
the o1 front axle assembly is not the same animal, that's why you should use a 97- down. you wouldn't take a dodge truck and put a ford motor in it because you had a ford motor laying around would u? it just doesn't make sense to do what your wanting to do. a 97 down swap is a bolt in affair. to each their own if that's what u wanna do though.
For one dodge suck. But good point. I figured that they were not that dissimilar. Well beside the metric bolt pattern. Thought maybe there was something that I could do with what I got and not have to buy another axle. I mean free is free.
i see your point, just trying to keep you from getting your self into a mess. i'd sell that 01 front axle assembly and put it towards a 97-down d-60. i need a d-60 also for my 94 f-250, as the 50 is shot and i don't wanna deal with it anymore. pete
Thanks for the input I figured I would ask because I was not sure and didn't want it to be a big pain. Plus I had heard about people liking to put the hole axle springs and all out of a 99-01 truck into the old body stile. That is what fueled the question.
first off, the bolt pattern is different, so you will need to carry 2 spare tires, or convet the rear rear also,
second: the steering linkage is different,
third: the spring perches are in different places. so you will either have to move the perches, move the springs, or put it in with the springs twisted to the side by 3/4 inch.
forth: if i remember correctly, the universals are different, so you will need a custom driveshaft.
if you can find one, get one 91 and older. i got mine out of an 89, it has king pins as apposed to ball joints. it is still a direct bolt up, just make sure you have the same ratio
Bonus to using a superduty one is tighter turning radius. Big down side is unless you have a 4.10 geared rear end and the F350 SD is 4.10, then you will have to regear one of them. As far as I know 3.55 and 4.10 were what the obs came with and 3.73 and 4.10 were the more common SD ones. Plus the lug patter is different but over on powerstrokenation there is a thread similar where I think someone had the front flange redrilled for the obs pattern.
