Have an 01 x, v10, 75k miles. Seems fine while not pulling. Pulling the boat (< 5000#) this morning it started acting up.
Off the line and very very easily accelerating up to 60 ok. Trying to accelerate at a more normal pace or passing situation the trans drops out of OD, but doesn't pick up speed. A little more gas and it drops down another gear (turning about 4000rpm) but still will not pick up speed.....actually slows a little???? Get off the gas and back with the feather touch. It will go back into OD and slowly reach 60 again.
Fluid and level look good.
Haven't unhooked the boat and rechecked not pulling yet.
Any ideas? Only had the truck for a week and this is the first time pulling anything.
Have you changed the fluid and done normal maintenace? If not you might consider changing the fluid and filter. Be sure to drain the torque converter if there is a plug and or pump it out if not. You might have a sticking valve body and new fluid could help. Just my thoughts, no warranty expressed nor implied. But good luck. Jim
Planned to do that this afternoon. Thought I would get comments on other possible causes prior. Hope the fluid service works.
Never changed my own trans fluid. Thought I would do it myself since I can drain the pan prior to removing it. Anything complicated about draining the TC or is it obvious once I get in?
If you have a 2000 or older there will be a plug on the converter on the outside rim and you will have to turn the converter to find it. I ONLY use 6 point sockets to prevent damage to the plug. And very cautious to not strip out when installing. There is a procedure in the tech section on how to pump out the fluid if you don't have a plug on the converter. Just take a look not complex pretty straight forward. I did add 17 qts to fill it up and did not flush out the lines to the cooler so I did probably miss 2 qts but mine has been maintained frequently so I wasn't worried about the 2 qts. Good luck. Jim
All 2001 trucks have a drain plug, too. Even a few early 2002 trucks have one.
Changing the trans fluid is good preventative maintenance. It won't fix this problem, though. I think there is an engine problem here, not a trans problem. The first thing I'd do is replace the fuel filter, and if that didn't do it, check the fuel pump flow and pressure.
This does indeed sound like an engine problem rather than a transmission problem. It sounds as if you're engine is down a bit on power. Does the vehicle have any codes stored?
P1000 is always a code that pops up if you just turn the key and check for codes after it sat. Otherwise, if you can find someone with a Ford NGS, you'd be able to do a much better and more accurate diagnostic. If you can go to some sort of performance shop, they'll charge much less than the dealer and probably be able to diagnose the same day.
Well the problem was getting worse even without a trailer. So I was under the hood working the throttle linkage and listening. When I ramped the rpms up quickly it would die out.......then I noticed that the plastic intake piping (at the flex area) seemed like it wanted to collaspe. I then opened the air canister and found a damaged/collasped filter. I already had a new filter that I had planned to install, so I put it in and the problem went away. I am very relieved at the moment hoping that was the trans/engine problem. I have never seen a filter do this or create so much air restriction. Looks like when the filter was installed it was seated then forced in and created a weak spot on the side????
Unbelieveable difference in power
....Now I have a multi cylinder miss code, but that's a different topic. Think I will just replace all cops and plugs for a fresh start.
