Twin filter setup like AirDog

I was looking up AirDog systems for our IDI's and can't find too awful much, however I did find this and was thinking of using this instead of the stock filter setup that tends to leak(mounted between the Mech. pump and the Injection Pump), and an external regulator right before the injection pump, what do you guys think?

XX-Fuel 8 Micron Filter / Water Separator + 2 Micron Filter Kit
FASS Fuel Pressure Regulator

My junk is too slow to feel like pulling up links, but to me that sounds about like what NMB2 is running. Has the filters on the frame rail, and uses a boost actuated regulator.

X2 what Mike said. Look up his thread. Its over at PSN. You will probably have to do a search within the thread to find it but its a really nice setup.

Nice!

I'll be doing about the same set up after mine is running, I hate having that fuel filter on the motor.... From the lift pump to a fenderwell mounted fuel filter to the IP pump, No need for a regulator if you stay with the stock lift pump.

Why they ever did such a dumb setup on that filter is beyond me, I rebuilt mine so I hope it goes for a year or so.

The regulator should help power because it'll keep pressure spikes down, so you have constant pressure in the injection pump, or it'll at least help it last longer, also I was thinking it would help decrease air in the system which is also a boost in power because of higher injection pressure and better atomization, I was looking for an air/fuel separator but haven't come up with anything yet, but i'll keep looking

The fenderwell mounting is my plan, and i'm also working on a custom adapter to relocate the oil filter and to run dual oil filters, then an auxiliary oil cooler, I'm aiming for 14 quarts of capacity, stock is 10 with a filter, so an additional quart from a PSD filter, then two more from a secondary filter, then hopefully another full quart from the auxiliary cooler, and i'm looking into putting a higher pressure spring in to bump it up to 15-20 lbs at idle and keep it around 40-50 at rated RPM.

Ok, so i found an adjustable AirDog fuel system designed for the 89-93 C***ins, its factory preset at 10-13 PSI but has an adjustable regulator, with a little work on the fittings this should work if we bypass the factory lift pump, which i believe requires a BBC block off plate, and there ma be more benefit from running a little higher pressure into the injection pump like maybe 10 PSI instead of 5-7 PSI.
Thoughts or comments?

one question.

why spend so much money on a fuel filter/water/air separator?

i understand what it does and the benefits, but i don't know how any body could justify that for an IDI.

Ok this might sound dumb. I just got my 88 and this is my first diesel. I have 2 fuel filters/seperators I thought they all had it, I have the one on the engine and one on the drivers side fender. It looks like it's always been there. So this isnt the stock setup?

Good clean air-free fuel = power, obviously not a ton of power but every little bit helps, plus it should help longevity of the pump and injectors, and IIRC the stock setup has a problem with the fuel heater and a problem with drain-back right?

at a very minimum it will increase pump and injector life.

Stock filter is only 14 micron nominal, so its probably more around 20 absolute, this is terrible for a primary filter.

^ X 1000, having better filtration and less air should give better atomization at NOP(Nozzle opening pressure) and throughout injection, plus if you run a higher pressure into the IP it should decrease wear on the internal transfer pump and it will decrease aeration of the fuel, there for more power, while it may not be much on an N/A, I'd venture to say you would pick up 5-10 Hp Turbo'd from the atomization and better filtering than with the garbage sent through the IP now.

Also it should be noted that any decrease in air in the injection side of the fuel system is going to help timing, when the IP pumps for a cylinder first it must compress any air in the lines before it can build any PSI to open the nozzle, so your injection(point where the nozzle opens) will be delayed by a few milliseconds, so then this throws your ignition point(when the fuel actually starts to burn) off a few milliseconds, so your timing is late therefore a loss in power. man i could go on for hours

I would love to have a airdog/ FASS setup that can be frame mounted to move the filters out of the engine bay and simply run a feed like to the injection pump. I am currently running an electric pump so I already have the block off, but I would personally like to get a pump that pushes more fuel and regulate it down, versus a pump that doesn't put out enough.
