iam going to build a 460 what is a good year to get i found a 1980 460 and a 79 the others ithink are later 460 i want to build a 500 ***** it is for my 69 shot box
The older the better, only as cylinder heads go. Can't give you any specifics, but likely anything you use can be made to work. Getting 500hp shouldn't be too hard these days.
Aftermarket heads are a better deal then throwing money on old stuff, depending on how worn out they are.
Depending on your budget. I would go 78 or older block and rotating assembly. Heads..unless you want to pony up some doe the old 429 heads were pretty fair. Look for C8 or D0 castings. If you are building it, might as well get a stroker kit.
Remember there are a lot of differences between the 78 and older to the 79 and newer.

Only difference in the block is the cylinder skirts are .250 longer on the 79 and newer. Better for the 557 stroker kits. Otherwise, ANY 429 460 block will do.

429-460ford.com is your friend.
Yes true, I was firing a general warning shot about the earlier rotating assembly not being compatible in the later blocks. Kind of like any other Ford project, when you start mixing and matching, do your homework well. You never know what you will run into if you don't.
my bud said he has a 429 i can have i had see it run i think it come out of a lincin are would i be better off with a 460 there is a guy that has a 460 in truck for sale he whats 300.00 bucks but he dose not know what year the eng is what do you guys think thank
If I remember correctly Lincolns never came with a 429 only 460s. 460s are fairly inexpensive; look on craigs list in your area. $300, IMO, is too much for a 429 unless it's been gone through recently.

2-300 for a rebuildable core is a fair price more if it has the early heads, 429 cranks are getting harder to come by. I normally can buy 429-460 for 250-500 sometimes with a trans, but all need rebuilt. You cant even get machine work done for 300 now days, good luck finding a fresh built one for 300.
WOW! Alex if you are getting 429s that have been freshly gone through for $300. I will take all you can get. Something tells me a person's definition of gone through is entirely different that those of us who believe it means actually doing machine work. The cheapest I could find just the gasket set is $150. Cheapest timing set I could find was $38 I am at almost $200 so far & haven't machined a thing. Just getting the heads done will run you more than $300.
the 460 comes with trans it all needs rebuilding which i plane on because i want to build a 500 horse i plane on getting a strokre for it and heads for it . the 429 cames with a trans as well and it is free but needs too be builded as well what should i go with. thanks
They are the same engine. I prefer the larger cubic inches but that is me. 500hp is no big deal out of the 385 series engine. You can get to 400hp with the right cast heads, timing set & intake & headers. Port the intake & heads with a set of 1.7 rockers & you will be close to 500hp. You can get D0VE heads at pull a part for $34 each.
thanks for the imput i will go that way iam going togather all my parts be for i start to build the truck iam building my dads old 79 4x4 right now i hope to have it in paint by fall then i can put it togather in the winter and build the 69 at the some time somtimes it is hard i work at a body shop building rods for customers thanks for the input
My 429 makes 425hp to the tires so a little over 500 at the crank, but it's a little more radical than can be driven on the street. If you are going to buy a stroker kit which one are you looking at the smaller stroker cranks up to the 4.3 will work fine in the 429 block, if you go to the 4.5 crank you need to look for a d8 block with longer cylinder walls. To make 500 hp and it still be street able you need lots of cubes to help hide the larger cam needed to get top end power.
hi guys i bought a complete 429 with trans it has the wiring harnes and the hose on still i was going to get a 460 but every one is going 460 i want ot be diffrent it come from a 71 cyclone are a mistque that what the guy said from how i bought it for i payed 500 bucks the air cleaner says 429 -v4 it is afour barrel the block is a d1ve-a2b the heads are d8ve-a2a can i still build a 500 ***** with that is it a cj are a stock 429 i would like to hear back what you guy think thanks
