The other day I Tore the old 429 out of the 68 torino I just bought. When I tore it down I noticed that there is a large crack in the back of the water Jacket, so yesterday I aqquired a 460 out of a 78 lincoln. I was intending to use just the 460 block to rebuild my 429, but was interested if I'd get more performace if I used the 460 crank. the set of heads I'm using are early c9ve-a castings with screw in studs.
The car is going to be used for mainly street racing and cruising, but I also intend to take it to the track occasionally.
So do I build a 429 or a 460?
Also whats the best way to convert to adjustable valve train?, my heads currently have positive sto style screw-in studs and cast rockers.
Stick with the 460 short block and use the heads from the 429. Good combo that's a great start for a solid .030 over street/strip build and you get the extra 30 cubes to play with.
As for the heads, just get a set of screw in studs and long slot rockers for BB Chevy. You will have to get some pushrod guide plates from Ford Motorsport and hardened pushrods (be sure to get the right diameter!). The swap is simple and no head mods are needed.
