Replacing the fuel filter on this new to me 7.3. I get an aftermarket filter with the filter in the cap. I replace the filter, which was separated from the old cap, hand tighten, crank, and had fuel squirting out in three directions from under the cap. I pull out the cap/filter and compare to the old one. In the threads in the fuel bowl is a fuel line on the right side smack in the middle of the threads. The old cap has two openings in the threads 180* apart from each other, I'm assuming to line one up with the fuel line. I look at the new cap and there are no openings in the threads to match up to this fuel line.
So does the cap need these openings as to have an opening for this fuel line? I don't know if the gasket was message up or the fuel line was blocked by a poorly designed cap??? Early 99 if it makes a didfference.

keep your old cap, you may need it one of these days. There are several different types/styles of cap. There are at least 3 different types of 0-rings that I know of (square, beveled, round) and they are sometimes hard to seal. Hand tight will not 'get it' and sometime even tightening it down too tight will cause it to leak. Have the o-ring wet to help the cap slide around it when tightening. there is a happy medim in there somewhere. the opens in the threads should not cause or help anything as far as I know. ???
The gasket must of been squeezed out of position. For a minute I used the new filter and old cap and no leak, but then that combo did not have the screen outside of the element. I put on the new cap on and re-did and all is good now, minus the fuelly smell.
