shudder

hey guys, heres the info

1993 bronco,
351
220,000 km's
auto

it seems at around 1500 to 2500 rpm while going up small hills the truck tries to shift down a gear but gets caught in this awful shudder. i would release the gas peddle for a second and then give it gas and it would be good for a few seconds but then do it again. it happens at lower rpm if i have the electronic OD on and higher rpm's if EOD is off...

also, this thing seems kinda powerless when compared to our 91 f150 4x4 with the 302 in it...

any thoughts or ideas?

thanks

Lloyd

Sounds like E4OD (the automatic transmission in the truck) problems. You would do well to pull fault Codes. The computer in the truck knows more about the problem at this point. Has the transmission ever been serviced? (Fluid/filter replaced). If so, how long since it was last done? Could be a slipping torque converter based upon your description of the symptoms.

we bought it last fall so i have no idea if it has ever been serviced. would a service help? i was thinking new filter and oil, and maybe a bottle of lucas?

as for codes, the check engine light doesn't come on...would a trans code set off the check engine light?

thanks again

Try running the codes anyway just in case. Sounds to me like it's ready for the fluid to be replaced. Seafoam makes a tranny additive that actually works now too.

My two cents.....
Pull KOEO and CM codes.
Drop transmission pan and inspect it, replace filter, be sure rubber gasket on neck of old filter come out. Drain torque converter. Fill with about 14 qts of correct ATF. No additives.

If you find only engine fault codes correct them to make the transmission happier also.

We had a big merc that did the same thing. The ford house said it was the converter not locking up. They flushed it and replaced the filters and oil and it ran fine for 80000 miles then we had to do it again. It wasnt the e40d but it did excatly the same thing yours is doing but to my knowledge it didnt throw a code or if it did the mil light didnt come on
