Transmission...WTF??
Ok, I went on AT for two weeks, came back, and the charging system wasn't working. Found out the Alternator was overcharging and had charred the hot wire going to the back of it. Fixed that. Transmission was shifting like crap. Whiplash when shifting into drive or reverse, going up gears the tranny would slam into gear. Down shifting was smooth though. Had trouble finding gears.
Then the truck cuts out under heavy acceleration. But it only seems like it cuts out in the 'middle' of the gas pedal's range. If you let off of it just minutely, it stops cutting out. If you push on it just a little more, it goes like it should. This isn't a constant problem. I just changed the fuel filter four weeks ago when this first happened. It was full of gook and dirt.
Now, the check engine light has been on forver (since the problem first started) and goes off intermittently. When the engine is floored or at higher than normal RPMS (only when moving) the light goes off and the transmission seems to shift somewhat smoother. When the check engine light is on, the shifting is hard.
I am so confused!! This truck has me totally stumped! I'm using some of my college money to go get it rebuilt (if its needed). This transmission confuses me also because it seems like I can't get a good reading on the level of tranny fluid in it. It has (or had) two bottles of Lucas in it, with new filter, new fluid. It leaks at the rear main. It looks way over full when Its hot idiling in park, but it just doesn't seem right.
You sir, are completely correct. The engine was idling at 1850 whereas it should have been less than 1000.
Cost me 150 bucks to get it changed. Tranny is fine, now the Ujoints are going out.
